Whether it be plain and simple to ultra contemporary to purely traditional, you're sure to find a vanity to suit your tastes and needs. Vanities come as free standing, resembling more of a table than a traditional vanity. They can be ornate and elevated slightly off the floor with decorative legs. One very nice vanity that I installed was purchased at a local Home Goods store. It came with the marble top and faucet.
Finishes come in white melamine, walnut, maple and solid cherry to name a few. In many cases you'll find today's vanities to be slightly larger. This is great in hiding a footprint or paint lines on the wall. Not all vanities are free standing. Today's contemporary vanities can be wall mounted and can have hidden drains. The water simply disappears along the back of the vanity instead of going through a standard drain. This provides excellent storage.
Note that the plumbing behind a pedestal sink must look very nice since it's exposed and visible. All supply tubes, valving, and drain must have a polished finish. Pedestal sinks can be purchased with a matching toilet to create a nicely uniform appearance. Some companies combine the look of a pedestal sink with an open style base as shown in the first picture at the top of the page.
